The invitation system: ELMS, Asian LMS and the road to Le Mans
How the ELMS, the Asian Le Mans Series and the Road to Le Mans qualify teams for the 24 Hours of Le Mans through automatic invitations.
Lining up at the 24 Hours of Le Mans cannot simply be decided: the field is limited and highly sought after. Some entrants come from the world and continental championships, but the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, which organises the event, also reserves places for the best teams in its own series. That is the principle of automatic invitations, at the heart of what is known as the road to Le Mans.
A limited field, places to be earned
The number of cars allowed to start the 24 Hours of Le Mans is capped. Not every team that would like to take part can do so. To structure access and reward sustained performance, the organiser created a system in which certain endurance series offer their winners an invitation, that is, a reserved place for the following edition of the Le Mans classic.
The European Le Mans Series (ELMS)
The European Le Mans Series is the continental European endurance championship run under the ACO banner. Contested over several rounds of a few hours each, it brings together prototypes and GT cars. At the end of the season, the best teams in each category earn an automatic invitation to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The ELMS is therefore a favoured route for teams wanting to reach Le Mans without going through the World Endurance Championship.
The Asian Le Mans Series
The Asian Le Mans Series is the Asian counterpart of the ELMS, also organised under the Le Mans banner. Its calendar, often concentrated over the winter, makes it a popular entry point. As in Europe, the class winners of the Asian Le Mans Series earn an automatic invitation to Le Mans. This series has allowed many international teams to reach the Sarthe by standing out over a small number of races.
The Road to Le Mans
The Road to Le Mans is a competition held on the Circuit de la Sarthe itself, as part of the 24 Hours week. It gives drivers and teams the chance to race on the legendary layout alongside the main event. Beyond the experience, it sits within the Le Mans series ecosystem and helps identify the talents and outfits aspiring to join the main field.
How automatic invitations work
An automatic invitation guarantees the team that earned it a place on the entry list for the following edition, subject to confirming its entry and meeting the organiser's conditions. It rewards performance over a full season, not a single race. This mechanism creates a direct link between the satellite championships and the Le Mans classic: doing well in the ELMS or the Asian Le Mans Series concretely opens the doors to Le Mans.
A coherent pyramid
Together these form a coherent pyramid. At the top sits the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the pinnacle of the discipline and the flagship round of the World Endurance Championship. Below it, continental and regional series — the ELMS and the Asian Le Mans Series — feed the field with deserving teams, while formats such as the Road to Le Mans offer a first step on the circuit itself. This architecture lets private teams and young drivers build a record and, in time, reach the most prestigious event in endurance racing.
