Alfa Romeo
Founded in Milan in 1910, Alfa Romeo embodies the romance of pre-war Italian motor racing like no other marque. Driven first by Nicola Romeo and then by the genius of engineer Vittorio Jano, the company turned its road cars into racing weapons, and it was with the sublime 8C 2300 that it wrote one of the most dominant chapters in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Four consecutive victories, from 1931 to 1934: no manufacturer had ever achieved such a streak at La Sarthe before. In 1931, Earl Howe and Henry Birkin gave the 8C 2300 its first Le Mans triumph. In 1932, Raymond Sommer and Luigi Chinetti repeated the feat, before Sommer won again in 1933, this time paired with the legendary Tazio Nuvolari, at the end of an extraordinarily intense finish against another Alfa Romeo crew. In 1934, Chinetti, alongside Philippe Étancelin, sealed the fourth straight win. In those years, the duel between Alfa Romeo and Bugatti defined European motorsport, and Le Mans was one of its greatest stages. That same Chinetti, winner in 1932 and 1934, would later play a decisive role in the sport's history as Ferrari's importer and ambassador in America — proof that the Alfa Romeo school fed the entire endurance racing ecosystem, starting with Enzo Ferrari himself, who long ran the Milanese marque's racing programme. After the war, Alfa Romeo focused on Grand Prix racing and then on sports car championships, where its Tipo 33 prototypes shone through the 1970s without ever finding their way back to overall victory at La Sarthe. The marque's Le Mans record therefore remains anchored in that golden era: four wins, between 1931 and 1934, enough to place Alfa Romeo among the great constructors in the race's history. Absent from today's endurance grids, Alfa Romeo remains an essential part of Le Mans heritage: its 8Cs are among the most admired cars in historic racing, and its four-in-a-row of the 1930s remains one of the founding pillars of the race's legend.
