Alpine
Founded in Dieppe in 1955 by Jean Rédélé, Alpine embodies a distinctly French philosophy of the racing car: light, agile and elegant. The marque made its name at La Sarthe in the 1960s with small Renault-powered prototypes that punched far above their weight in class, before aiming higher in the following decade with full industrial backing from Renault. The crowning moment came in 1978, when Didier Pironi and Jean-Pierre Jaussaud won the 24 Hours of Le Mans aboard the Alpine A442B entered by the Renault Elf works team, powered by a turbocharged V6. That victory, secured after a war of attrition with the Porsche 936s, remains the Dieppe manufacturer's only outright win — and one of the most celebrated triumphs in French motorsport history, with Renault withdrawing from endurance racing immediately afterwards to focus on Formula 1. After a long absence from the prototype ranks, Alpine patiently rebuilt its Le Mans story from the 2010s onwards. In partnership with Signatech, the brand took multiple LMP2 class victories at the 24 Hours, establishing a first-rate operational pedigree. It stepped up to the premier class in 2021 with the A480, a grandfathered LMP1 prototype adapted to the Hypercar rules, which allowed Alpine to race the factory giants for two seasons and return to the overall Le Mans podium. The modern era truly began in 2024 with the A424, Alpine's first purpose-built LMDh Hypercar, powered by a 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 developed with Mecachrome. The programme has gathered momentum steadily, with maiden World Endurance Championship podiums validating the car's architecture. For 2026, Alpine Endurance Team fields two factory A424s in the FIA WEC. Forty-eight years after Pironi and Jaussaud's feat, the French marque is chasing a second outright victory — one that would turn a glorious memory into something more lasting: a permanent place at the summit of world endurance racing, on home soil, in front of its own crowd.
